![]() ![]() None of Home Movies gets as wacky as Smiling Friends. Related: Smiling Friends: How a Niche Corner of the Internet Became Great Television The basic premise of Home Movies is rather simple, but where it truly shines is in the conversations between Brendon and his alcoholic soccer coach/father figure John McGuirk, voiced by Bob’s Burgers’s H. The show follows eight-year-old Brendon Small (voiced by his namesake and creator) making movies with his friends Jason and Melissa. Home Movies is a very funny but significantly calmer watch than Smiling Friends, but the series’ unique art style and naturalistic dialogue make it a natural precursor to the recent hit. Like Smiling Friends, Mike Tyson Mysteries isn’t afraid of being an out-there combo of high and low brow comedy, and it stands out as a result. It gets even weirder, though, when it’s revealed that McCarthy’s literary rival John Updike is working with the monster. The first episode, for instance, has the team traveling to Cormac McCarthy’s ranch to help the author complete his latest novel, only to find out that a Chupacabra is stalking the premises. Their tasks are not always mysteries, but the real mystery of the show is how the situations will comically turn by an episode’s end. Mike Tyson Mysteries has our characters traveling the world and even through time. The series follows former boxer Mike Tyson and his oddball team - adopted daughter Yung Hee, a Victorian era ghost, and a pigeon who was once a man - as they solve mysteries around the world a la Scooby-Doo. If you appreciate the way Smiling Friends combines the nonsensical and the horribly mundane, Mike Tyson Mysteriesmay be for you. All of Koala Man’s eight episodes are out now on Hulu, so give it a shot if you just can’t get enough of Cusack’s Australian goodness. Cusack reunites audiences with the characters Damo and Darren from his breakout YouTube short “Ciggy Butt Brain.” On the voice actor side, Hugh Jackman and Jemaine Clement are both series regulars, and guest stars include Alexandra Daddario, Miranda Otto, Justin Roiland, and Hugo Weaving. Koala Man also features some fun appearances from characters and actors alike. Related: Adult Swim's Smiling Friends: What We Hope to See in Season 2 By the end of the first episode, Koala Man introduces a giant, talking alien flower monster that eats garbage, and it only gets stranger from there. What starts as a man doing minor tasks around town - rescuing a cat from a tree and helping an elderly woman with her Blu-ray player, for instance - quickly devolves into bizarre, otherworldly antics. The series follows Kevin, a middle-aged Australian man who protects his city of Dapto, New South Wales as the masked vigilante Koala Man. Cusack’s latest creation, Hulu’s Koala Man is a show about Australia (go figure), but this time it’s a little mellower than the absurdity of Smiling Friends.
