My Mac did see a performance decrease with Big Sur for the first time in many years. In fact given the rather large jump between Catalina and Big Sur, I think it might have made more sense to drop support then, if one was going to. Not to mention that some supported products are actually lower spec (mac mini). Honestly, given the relatively good quality of apple software (at least on their own platforms) and the limited changes between Big Sur and Monterrey, I do not see this being an issue of old/obsolete hardware.
